What Faith Is Not — So We Can Understand What Faith Truly Is

Understanding what faith is not helps us strip away the assumptions and misconceptions, allowing the true essence of biblical faith to shine. Let’s take a closer look.

In an age where the term faith is thrown around in every corner of conversation—from religious circles to motivational seminars—it's vital to pause and ask: What exactly is faith? And perhaps more importantly: What is faith not?

1. Faith is not mental assent

Many confuse knowing about God with believing in God. Mental assent is acknowledging a truth without committing to it. You can agree that the Bible is true, that God exists, and that Jesus died and rose again—and yet not truly trust or rely on Him.

Even demons believe and tremble (James 2:19), but they don’t have saving faith. Faith goes beyond intellectual agreement. It involves the heart, the will, and total trust in the person and promises of God.

2. Faith is not just possibility thinking

Positive thinking is powerful, but it’s not faith. Possibility thinking says, “If I think positively enough, I’ll get the outcome I want.” But faith is not rooted in optimism—it’s rooted in God’s Word.

Faith doesn’t say “I hope this might happen because I feel good about it.” Faith says, “I believe this will happen because God said it.” It’s not about manipulating the outcome through mindset—it’s about standing firmly on the unchanging truth of God’s promises.

3. Faith is not blind belief

Contrary to popular notions, faith is not a leap into the dark. It’s not “believing in something without evidence.” Biblical faith is not irrational or baseless.

Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith is based on the revealed character of God and the track record of His Word. It has a foundation—even when the outcome is invisible.

4. Faith is not ordinary boldness or bravery

Courage is admirable, but faith isn’t simply about being brave. A soldier might charge into battle with bravery, but that’s not necessarily faith. Faith is not boldness in your own strength; it is confidence in God's strength.

David faced Goliath, not because he was merely courageous, but because he had faith in the God who delivered him from the lion and the bear. Faith is boldness that springs from a relationship with God—not raw human will.

5. Faith is not a strong wish or desire

Wanting something intensely is not the same as having faith for it. You can desire healing, breakthrough, or provision, but desire alone doesn’t move mountains—faith does.

Desire says, “I hope it happens.” Faith says, “I believe it will happen because God has spoken.” Desire can lead to frustration when unmet, but faith rests even when results delay, because it trusts in the One who is faithful.

So, What Is Faith?

Having cleared the clutter, here is a biblical definition: Faith is complete trust and dependence on God, anchored in His Word, leading to obedient action—regardless of what is seen or felt.

True faith:

  • Trusts God’s character

  • Believes His Word

  • Acts in obedience

  • Stands in confidence

  • Waits in patience

Faith is not about feelings. It’s not rooted in the seen. It’s not manipulated by time. It is the lifestyle of the believer (Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 1:17). It is the currency of the kingdom and the foundation for pleasing God (Hebrews 11:6).

When you know what faith is not, you’re better positioned to walk in what faith is. In a world full of wishful thinking, emotional hype, and intellectual pride, real faith stands like a rock—anchored in the living God.

“The just shall live by faith.” — Romans 1:17
