In a world where emotions can deceive and attraction can fade, discerning the right partner requires more than physical chemistry or financial compatibility. It requires spiritual clarity and divine alignment.
Before I continue, I need to thank God's Servant "Dr. Paul Enenche" for this insightful teaching, I just expand on the 4 tests that he revealed and I am greatly blessed.
In the realm of purpose-driven relationships, there are four divine tests that every man or woman must consider before saying “I do.” These tests are not just spiritual checkpoints—they are mirrors that reflect God’s heart concerning your future.
1. The Conviction Test
Romans 8:14 – “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
This is where it begins: inner conviction. It’s not about what your emotions are screaming, it’s about what the Spirit of God is whispering. Who is leading your decision—your fears, fantasies, or the Holy Spirit?
When you parent are rushing you into a marriage, they will not be the one to live in that marriage, you are the one to stay therein. The fear of your age growing should also not be the conviction.
Conviction comes when you’ve surrendered your will and allowed God’s will to take the wheel. This test asks: Do you feel spiritually led into this relationship, or are you forcing a connection to avoid loneliness?
You must be whole to be ready for marriage, not half being.
In my journey, I’ve learned this: if God is not backing your decision, no amount of prayer after the mistake can fully erase the pain that comes with it. Your past mistakes are stored in your database, always there for you to retrive. Let your “yes” be Spirit-driven, not socially pressured.
2. The Peace Test
? Philippians 4:6-7 – “Be anxious for nothing... and the peace of God… will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
When you think about this person, do you feel peace or panic? Do you feel rested or restless? God’s peace is a compass; it doesn't shout, it gently confirms.
Peace is not the absence of butterflies; it’s the presence of stillness even when uncertainties exist. Many rush into marriage without paying attention to this inner alarm system.
If thinking of marrying this person gives you consistent unease, confusion, or dread, pause. God is not the author of confusion. A partner from God won’t just fit your life; they’ll fit your spirit.
3. The Love Test
? 1 John 4:8 – “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
This is not about infatuation—it’s about God-like love. Do you love this person like Christ loves you? Can they love you when you’re unlovable, inconvenient, or imperfect?
Unconditional love is tested when feelings fade and life becomes real. Can you both serve each other without ego? Do you forgive easily? Are you committed to building even when the emotions are low?
Love is not a fleeting high; it’s a daily choice. If it’s not sacrificial, it’s not love. If it’s manipulative, it’s not love. And if it’s rooted in lust, it will rot with time.
4. The Time Test
? Mark 14:29-30 – “Even if all fall away, I will not… Truly I tell you… before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.”
Time is the ultimate revealer. Convictions that are genuine stand the test of time. Feelings may start strong but time proves depth. Is this person the same during storms as they are in sunshine?
Do not rush what God wants to grow slowly. Rushing into marriage without giving it time to mature is like eating unripe fruit—bitter and regretful. Pastor Enenche advises you pray to God to cause the person to behave the behaviours they are hiding from you.
Just like Peter’s loyalty was tested over time, so will your relationship. Time will expose character, commitment, values, and integrity. And most importantly, time will confirm if your conviction was truly from God or just a product of excitement.
Final Thoughts
Marriage is not a game—it’s God’s institution. And if He authored it, He must be invited into every page. Don't choose based on pressure, culture, or the hype on social media. Choose based on God’s peace, His love, His timing, and His Spirit.
Let the four tests—Conviction, Peace, Love, and Time—guide your steps. If your relationship passes all four, then you're not just walking into a marriage—you’re stepping into destiny.
?? May your decision be Spirit-led, peace-filled, love-rooted, and time-tested.
